Eastern Transport Coalition — Commuters Count

Trails for Tomorrow

A campaign for more walking and riding trails across Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

Why Invest in Trails?

By investing in trails, we can create safe, accessible and visually interesting corridors and spaces that encourage physical activity, improve mental well-being, and connect people to places of interest, services and nature.

Regional trails are used by many different groups, particularly walkers and riders. They are mostly off-road, long and continuous in length, and have a regional scale, purpose and impact.

Trails not only promote healthier lifestyles and provide community enrichment — they also enhance local economies by attracting outdoor enthusiasts from across Victoria. Trails have an important domestic function too, with locals using them to commute, relax and exercise.

Ten trails have been identified as high-priority projects for our region. These trails are essential for enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities and extend community access to jobs, education, small businesses and potential tourism opportunities. They also play a significant role in promoting environmental stewardship and community connectivity.

Benefits of Regional Trails

Investing in trails delivers lasting returns for communities, the environment and local economies.

Social & Health Benefits

Regional trails create spaces for people to exercise together, building community connection and contributing to good mental and physical health for people of all ages.

Environmental Benefits

A high-quality trail network encourages people to walk or cycle rather than drive, reducing vehicle numbers on roads, improving air quality, and cutting noise pollution and traffic congestion.

Economic & Tourism Benefits

Most visitors to regional trails in eastern Melbourne are locals — and they have the same economic potential as tourists travelling from further afield. Trails also support local businesses, from cafés to fitness operators.

Community Connectivity

Trails extend community access to jobs, education, small businesses and services — providing vital transport links for residents who rely on active travel options.

Trails for Tomorrow

We aim to work with federal and state governments to ensure the economic, social, and environmental wellbeing of Melbourne's outer east. The initiatives we promote are crucial to the eastern region's growing business opportunities, thriving job market, clean air, and liveable communities.

Our policy document Trails for Tomorrow makes the case for government funding that will enrich our communities, support sustainable transport, grow tourism, and provide lasting benefits for generations to come.
